If the rebate in removed people will die uneccesarily because they could not afford private health. Our public hospitals are already way over crowded- do we really want to go down this path Julia???

This is supposed to be a country with free health care. First the gov’t discourages “free” public health care by taxing a Medicare surcharge on those of us who supposedly should be able to afford private health care according to them. Now they want to eat into the rebate. I have often discovered that when it comes to means testing, what the gov’t thinks is affordable is rarely the case in reality with the person who struggles to pay these so-called affordable amounts. Private health insurance is not cheap, even with the rebate. Those of us who pay for private health ins are also paying for the “free” public health system through our Medicare levy. The rebate is supposed to be a reduction of this double payment. Really I am so sick of the gov’t constantly gouging us with absolutely no benefit to those of us paying. Witness the carbon tax. If I can afford it I can pollute to my heart’s content! So no help to the environment but extra money in the gov’t pockets – to do what with pray tell? So to what great public benefit would they spend the rebates they won’t have to pay under means testing?
