The Benefits Of Private Health Insurance

So you eat the right foods, live an active lifestyle and avoid taking risks that might affect your health. But even if you have no family or personal history of serious illness you cannot be sure that nothing will go wrong in the future. Sometimes you are simply in the firing line for ill-health.

People who have private health insurance have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are covered for the best available medical treatments when and if they become necessary.

Private health insurance provides value to its members as it:

  • Gives you the option of being treated by your own doctor
  • Means shorter waiting times for elective surgery
  • Allows you more control over when and where to be treated
  • Helps with services not covered by Medicare such as chiropractic, dental, physiotherapy, optical, dietary advice and some alternative therapies.

I have been coerced in private health insurance — which goes up by 5-10% every year — yet have to pay 3/4 of my specialists bill???? This is ridiculous — I am going to send all my doctors bills to the government from now on

The government wants us all to have private insurance. It is getting to the stage where no one can afford the huge gap payments. I have had 2 spinal surgeries and I was out of pocket $6k for each and a rehab bill of $16k. The government needs to start increasing the schedule fee they pay the medical specialists to decrease the gap payments.

Have to be on private cover for peace of mind as I have a condition that could come back at any time. Any of the public hospital I would have to go to would not be ideal to be in for between 6 to 8 weeks. The private accommodation and staff are very professional and caring.

My husband has just come home from hospital. He had a triple heart bypass I am so glad we had private health insurance. Tell the government to leave the private health insurance alone we are on a low income but don’t want to be stuck in the public system waiting for years for surgery.

Sarah Charles comment on leadership is fantastic, this means test along with many initiatives of our governments shows a great divide between the goals and priorities of our government vs the needs of it’s citizens (This is examplified by the human impacts of mismanaged coal seam mining in QLD). Increased transparancy is required and the people should have more say.

The Federal government is unlikely to demonstrate any transparency towards this matter. There has been no explanation how “means” testing will work. Will the Federal government consider the CPI twice a year and have an actual income threshold which considers dependants?
Doubt it. What happens to those who suffer significant hardship during this and consider the 30% a blessing?

Great leadership is about resonance and positive encouragement to it’s people. This is just a plan to take something away and while planning to do so, cause all sorts of emotions in a community that believes Private health insurance is worth it despite the significant gap costs.

At 91 years of age I have been contributing to peivate health care since I came to Australia in 1955-56+ years and am able to continue as long as the Govt.continues to allow the subsidy.please don’t stop it especially for the elderly on pensions.
